Paul George Labelle, 75, of Columbia, SC, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2023 at Prisma Health after a 13 day stay in ICU.
Paul was born on February 28, 1948 to Leo and Cecile Labelle in Woonsocket, RI. Being the only child of older parents, he was well-loved and cared for, experiencing an idealistic childhood with summers at Spring Lake and memorable time spent with friends. After Paul graduated from Woonsocket High School in 1966, he went on to study at Rhode Island Jr. College.
After graduating with his Associates degree, he began his career at Flowers’ Bakery as a supervisor, kickstarting a 30 year career in the bakery business. Work moved Paul from the long cold days in the North to the warm, welcoming South.
Before moving to Spartanburg, SC, Paul was blessed with his first son, Ryan Labelle. Paul met Mary while she was working at Ingles while he was pushing little Ryan in the buggy. Mary gave Ryan a donut and the rest is history. They married on March 25, 1977. Paul and Mary went on to have two children together, Benjamin Travis and Joey Christopher Labelle. Paul and Mary were members of Bethesda Baptist Church and Morningside Baptist Church in Spartanburg, SC.
Always a working man, Paul worked for Liberty Tax, retired and spent his time with family and friends. Paul was an avid bowler, and a gifted one at that. He once bowled a perfect 300 game. In 2015, Paul and Mary moved to Columbia to help care for their young grandchildren. Paul loved spending time with all of his grandchildren and attending all of their events; whether it was in a music hall or on the soccer field, Paul was always there. Being a man who never met a stranger, Paul also enjoyed working at his part-time job as a cashier at Northern Tool in Columbia, SC. His declining health forced his retirement in March 2023.
Paul was predeceased by his parents, Leo and Cecile Labelle. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary; sons, Ryan (Dee Dee Tipton) of Inman, SC, Travis (Allison) of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Joey (Katie) Labelle of Columbia, SC, and grandchildren, Morgan Labelle of Sarasota, FL, Emma Labelle of Germany, Joseph, James, John, and Vivienne Labelle of Columbia, SC.
Visitation will be at Bobo Funeral Chapel, Tuesday, December 26, 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. The service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Evangelist Jeffery Thomas officiating. Burial will in Bethesda Baptist Church Cemetery.
