Margaret Thomas Obituary

After a lifetime of loving her church, family, and community, Margaret Marie Solesbee Thomas, 88, of Converse, SC, passed away on February 27th, 2025.

Margaret was born on April 15, 1936, in Kings Mountain, North Carolina to Arthur Lee Solesbee and Mary Melinda Little Solesbee.  From an early age, Margaret’s unwavering faith, strength, and compassion for others was clear to all those who knew and loved her.

Margaret married the love of her life, William Haskell “Hack” Thomas, Jr., on Christmas Eve of 1949.  Together, they built a life and family filled with love.  Margaret is survived by three of her children:  Jean T. Loving (Gary) of Boiling Springs, SC, Sally T. O'Shields (Allen) of Spartanburg, SC, and Wendell A. Thomas (Lorri) of Converse, SC.  She will be dearly missed by her 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Hack, and two sons, W.H. Thomas Ill (Vivian) of Inman, SC, and Glenn Byron Thomas.

Margaret was a stay-at-home mother for many years.  This afforded her the opportunity to not only invest in her family but also her friends and community.  Margaret strived to be the hands and feet of Jesus through every interaction.  Whether helping a neighbor in need, feeding a grieving family, ministering to young people, or caring for the sick, Margaret could always be counted on to love those who needed it the most.

As her children aged, Margaret worked outside of the home at the Converse Mill and Northtown Laundry, but she found her true calling in 1978 with the US Postal Service.  In 1986, she was promoted to Postmaster of the Converse Post Office.  It was in this position that Margaret used her gift of listening and talking to encourage those who came to visit her each day.

Margaret was a devoted member of Converse Baptist Church.  Through her work on many committees and teaching children (SunBeams, GAs, VBS, and Sunday School), Margaret lived her mission to help share God’s love with others.  While she will be deeply missed by all those who loved her, her family takes comfort in the peace she has found in eternal life.

The family invites you to celebrate Margaret and a life well-lived.  Services will be held at Bobo Funeral Chapel in Spartanburg, Wednesday, March 5, with visitation from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm.  Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm by Reverends Mike Davis, Daniel Godfrey, and Michael Boyter.  Margaret’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers, with John Thomas serving as an honorary escort.  Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg, SC immediately following the service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Converse Baptist Church, PO Box 159, Converse, SC 29329 or March of Dimes.  Both were near and dear to Margaret’s heart.
