J. Roy Johnson Jr.

James Roy Johnson Jr., 87, passed away on March 16, 2026. He was the husband of Janice Howell Johnson, and the son of the late James Roy Johnson Sr. and Edna Taylor Johnson.

He is survived by his daughters, Angela Jane Johnson and Robin Johnson Griffith (Fred); his grandchildren, Anna Petty and Georgia and Jackson Griffith; his great grandchildren, Abby, Emerson, Ellery and Maya; and his sister-in-law, Donna Johnson.

Roy is predeceased by his brother, William Thomas Johnson, and his granddaughter, Ellen Petty.

Roy received a BS in Chemistry from Wofford College and an MS in Organic Chemistry from the University of Tennessee.  After completing ROTC at Wofford, he served in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant in the Chemical Corps.

He worked his entire professional career as a Chemist at Milliken & Co and retired in 2000 as a Director of Research.  He was a charter member of Reidville Road Church.  He loved reading, music, gardening, golf, basketball and beach trips with his family.

Roy lived a life of loyalty and devotion to his family, his career and to every commitment he made.  His daily life was a shining example of how duty and honor should guide your decisions and actions.  He loved to teach that to anyone who would listen.  He met his cancer battle head on with grace and bravery and discipline, only so that he could lengthen his time on earth to care for those he loved. He always persevered and he never gave up.

A visitation will be held on Monday, March 23, 2026, at Bobo Funeral Chapel, from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 PM at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Rev. Danny Wiley and Rev. Steve Keck will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Reidville Road Church Building Fund or to the Cancer Division of the Spartanburg Regional Foundation.
