She was the daughter of James Bellamy Croom and Elise Mundy Croom and born in Camden, SC, but spent her school years in Wilmington, NC, graduating from New Hanover High School in 1954. She attended Limestone College in Gaffney, SC where she won the freshman chemistry award and graduated in 1957 summa cum laude. In June of that year she married her college sweetheart, William (Bill) Kirkpatrick and they were happily married for an amazing 64 ½ years. They loved that they both grew up in a Trinity Methodist Church in different cities but married in Ann’s in Wilmington, NC.

She taught school in Spartanburg and Orangeburg, SC where her husband worked with the Chamber of Commerce. In Orangeburg she was active in her church, Junior League, garden and bridge clubs. When her husband changed careers she moved to Columbia, SC where she lived for 10 years and later lived in Greeley, CO, taking care of her three children while her husband pursued his career.

In 1976 the family moved to Lake Summit where they owned a cabin. She resumed her teaching career shortly after they completed their new house on the Lake Summit property. She served in interim positions at Hendersonville Middle School and Rugby Junior High School, then took a full-time position at Flat Rock Junior High (later Middle School) where she taught for another 21 years, for a total teaching career of 26 years, retiring in 2001. Since then she enjoyed gardening and lake activities. She served on the board of Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara for 5 years and was a member of First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her loving husband, William (Bill) Kirkpatrick, two sons William (Kirk) W. Kirkpatrick, Jr and his wife Patricia Schnaidt of San Francisco, CA and their two children, Emma and William III, James (Jim) C. Kirkpatrick of Flat Rock, NC, one daughter Lisa Kirkpatrick and her husband Kenn Jacobine of Waynesville, NC and their two children Chris and Alex.
