Mrs. Lathrop Mosley,
There are few people in life with the commitment and resolve to set the ideal; to raise the bar so as to encourage their own to rise with them for the betterment of all. Matt was one of these people.
Dr. Mosley taught me high school chemistry. He also taught me what it meant to be hard worker; to be overqualified but dedicated; to be a leader in the work place, to do without beings asked, to rise above what is expected. Usually the first to arrive to 1701 Skyline in the morning, he worked tirelessly and was always willing to help, no matter the problem, after a few sarcastic jokes and a quick trip to the main office to fix the server (... again). He did this for 10 hours, five days a week. In short, he ran the school.
This was a man with a doctorate in chemistry, qualified to teach the entire science curriculum, who knew easily as much about computers, networks, and programming, but who was willing to pay it forward by teaching admittedly obnoxious high schoolers (the least desirable age group to teach). His quite apparent humility and belief in his ideals impressed more than any expensive car or high salary, though he deserved both.
He had an excellent taste in music.
Anyone who ever spoke to Matt about his personal life knew how much he loved you. His face lit with a smile and a gleam such that you envied him more for his family and the love he had than for his intellect.
I was proud to have known him and to have been his student. He inspired everyone he ever taught, most of whom loved him (partly due to and partly despite his constant jokes and pranks). Some great men are remembered by history and others through it. Matt Mosley will be remembered through the Spartanburg Day School's staff, family, alumni, and students. It would not have nor will it ever again exhibit the excellence he inspired in it. Truly irreplaceable.
I hope that in time, you realize his continued presence in the things that you and he loved. My heart goes out to you in this time of grief, as do the hearts of all the alumni.
You have my deepest sympathy, my apologies, and my commiseration.
- Devin Mahon
Keeping you in our prayers,
the Mahons

Dr. Mosley was one of my most influential teachers. He ignited in me a passion for chemistry and always encouraged my curiosity within the subject. He is the pivotal reason I continued to study chemistry as my major course of study in undergrad at Carleton College (though he had an opinion when I transferred fromWofford!).
However, I did not look forward to his AP Chemistry class solely for the subject matter. I always also looked forward to his sense of humor and our banter. He was ruthlessly and mindfully funny. He taught me how to approach my studies lightheartedly albeit seriously - to be focused, but have fun with it, too. To this day, I exercise that approach in my work, and it is such a rare and precious gift for which I am do grateful to possess.
My sincerest condolences to his family and friends during this tremendously difficult time. His passing is a shock to all; it's untimely, unfair, and truly unbelievable. I hope he realized how widely loved and admired he was; his memory will surely always remain such.
Goodbye Dr. Mosley, whereever you are beyond this time and space. Rest in peace and rest assured you will never be forgotten. All my love.

Our sincerest sympathy to Dr. Moseley's family on his passing. He taught my daughter in AP Chemistry. It was her first difficult class and Dr. Moseley taught her to be an independent thinker and apply her curiosity to tackle this subject matter. He was light hearted and always had a sense of humor toward his students. He will be missed. Laura and Jim McVey, Jr., Aimee and Geoff McVey

SDS lost one of our very best this week. Matt was loved by everyone. He was everyone's best friend. He offered a kind word and always helped whenever he could (although he vowed that he couldn't and wouldn't). Yes he was funny and intelligent and special. SDS will miss him as I will. Lathrop, my heart aches for you. Treasure the time that you had knowing that you will be together again. Matt was needed for administrative help with a higher calling. Roberta Camp

Dear Lathrop,
There are no words that express how devastating the news of Matt's passing has been for me, and for all of the SDS family. From the first day he stepped 0nto the campus he began making his mark as a vital and irreplaceable member of our community. His manner was often straight forward with a healthy dose of humor, but he was always, always thinking of the benefit of his decisions to the school first. He was good to me: patient with my lack of technical know-how, supportive of the garden project, wanted my office to have everything I needed, and was my friend. He allowed me to nag him about his health. And I allowed him to shake his finger at me when I broke something... often.
I will never cross the threshold at school again without blessing him for all that he has meant to the school and its community and to me personally. There will never be another like him, and I can only say that I have been fortunate to be able to consider him a part of my life. I'm better for having known him.
You should know that you have a tremendous support group wanting to give to you as we honor Matt. Call on me, call on any of us. The Griffin family holds you in our collective hearts. Bless you and Matt's family.much love to you all, Marilyn
Ps: keep 'em guessing, Matt!

You were my one and only confidant. The times we spent everyday on your way home are memories that I will keep in my heart forever. You helped me understand the culture of SDS like no one else was able to. You were so brilliant and knowledgeable but sharing all of your funny stories with me from your college days made you so human. We had more in common than anyone will ever know. Everyday will be a burden for me to bare without you. My heart is so broken. I love you Matt and will miss you more that anyone will ever know.
